Most Topsail rentals that “sleep 11” pack the extra people onto sleeper sofas and share two bathrooms among everyone. If you’re bringing a real group, three families, a reunion, or a friends’ week, the details that matter are bathrooms per person, real beds, parking, and somewhere everyone can sit down to eat at the same time. Here’s how Sound to Sea handles each of those, plus how we’d plan the week for a group our size.
How does the house sleep 11?
| Room | Beds | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom 1 | King, own bath, TV | Grandparents or a couple |
| Bedroom 2 | King, own bath, TV | A second couple |
| Bedroom 3 | Queen | A third couple |
| Bedroom 4 | Two twins | Two kids, two teens, or two friends |
| Bedroom 5 | Twin-over-double bunk | Up to three kids |
That’s 7 real beds and nobody on a pull-out couch. Three setups we see often:
- Three couples and five kids: couples in the two king suites and the queen room, kids split between the twin room and the bunk room.
- Grandparents plus two families: grandparents take a king suite with its own bathroom, the parents take the other king and the queen, and the grandkids share the twin and bunk rooms.
- A friends’ trip of 8 to 10 adults: couples in the king and queen rooms, everyone else in the twin room and the bunk room’s double.
What makes a big group comfortable?
- 4.5 bathrooms: 4 full baths (2 with tubs) plus a half bath. That’s about 2 to 3 people per shower, not 5.
- Two primary suites with their own baths, so the two couples who most need privacy get it.
- Seating for 12 at meals: a dining table for 8 plus counter seating for 4, and covered outdoor dining under the house.
- A kitchen for real cooking: a full-size fridge and freezer, dishwasher, oven, stove, a pantry, and a charcoal grill outside.
- A washer and dryer in a laundry room, so beach towels get washed mid-week.
- Parking for up to 5 cars.
- Gathering space outside: a covered front porch, an enclosed sun porch, and a fire pit under the live oaks.
What does a big group pay in fees?
The fixed fees are the same no matter how many people come, so a bigger group spreads them thinner:
- Cleaning: $250 per stay
- Linens and towels: $160 per stay
- Damage protection: $49 per stay, and no security-deposit hold
- Dogs: $75 per stay for up to 2, if you bring them
That’s $459 per stay, about $42 a person for a group of 11, before NC sales and occupancy tax. The nightly rate depends on your dates, and the booking tool shows the exact total before you pay. You pay 50% to reserve and the balance 30 days before arrival. Booking direct means no platform service fee on top, and September and October arrivals get 10% off the nightly rent with code FALL10.
How do you feed 11 people on Topsail?
- Stock up before you cross the bridge, or skip the cart. The Food Lion on NC 50 and the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Fun Center Drive both offer pickup and delivery, so one person can order the big first-day run from the car and grab it on the way in. Surf City IGA on South Topsail Drive is the on-island fill-in.
- Do one seafood night at home. Surf City Crab & Seafood Market on Roland Avenue cuts fish to order, and Topsail Steamer at 302 S Topsail Drive sells ready-to-steam buckets: a High-Tider feeds about 4 to 5 and a Low-Tider 2 to 3, so two High-Tiders and a Low-Tider cover 11. Order ahead on summer Saturdays at (910) 328-2645.
- Eat out early. Daddy Mac’s doesn’t take reservations, and most casual seafood spots are walk-in. Arrive by 5 PM and split into two tables of five or six.
- For a dinner you can book, Marina Joe’s on the sound takes reservations online, Cape Fear Seafood Company books on Resy, and Low Tide Steakhouse on OpenTable. Daddy Mac’s doesn’t take reservations, but it seats 11 to 14 at two tables. Our Surf City restaurant guide has the full list.
What can a whole group do together?
- The sea turtle hospital. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue caps tours at 15 tickets per time slot, sold online per person (everyone needs a ticket, even toddlers). A group of 11 needs a slot with 11 open seats, so book as soon as your dates are set, or email the hospital about a group. No pets.
- Fish or crab the sound. Crab lines off the neighborhood dock, about 300 feet from the house, keep every age busy. The Surf City Ocean Pier lets the whole group fish on the pier’s license. Our guide to fishing and crabbing on Topsail has the spots.
- Bowling on a rainy day. High Tides & Good Vibes, at the foot of the bridge, has 16 lanes. Reserve on rainy July afternoons.
- Bear Island by ferry. A 15-minute ride from Hammocks Beach State Park to an island with no houses and no roads. Tickets are same-day, first come, first served, and every passenger needs one. In summer the island reaches capacity quickly, so a big group should arrive early. The 2026 season runs April 3 to October 25, with Friday to Sunday service only in October.
- Beach gear without the hauling. Topsail Beach Service delivers chairs, umbrellas, kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes anywhere on the island. Summer chair and umbrella rentals have a 6-day minimum, so book about a month ahead.
When is the best time for a big group?
June and September. June has warm water without July’s crowds. September has warm water, empty beaches after Labor Day, and 10% off with FALL10. July is full volume: access lots fill by mid-morning, and restaurants wait on Friday nights. See our month-by-month guide for details.
Planning a family reunion?
Our family reunion guide covers sleeping arrangements for mixed ages, comfort for grandparents and little ones, and how to split the cost fairly.
