Dog-Friendly Stays

A Dog-Friendly Beach House on Topsail Island (and How to Plan the Trip)

Quick answer

Sound to Sea in Surf City welcomes up to 2 dogs for a flat $75 per stay. It sleeps 11, it's a flat 400-foot walk to a private beach access, and there's an outdoor shower for sandy paws. Surf City requires a leash (20 feet or shorter) on the beach year-round, and the fenced Surf City Bark Park is a short drive away. For off-leash beach time, Topsail Beach, about 20 minutes south, allows dogs under voice control from October 1 to May 14, except in the preserve at its south tip.

Nearly half of the groups who book Sound to Sea bring a dog. That comes from our own booking history, not a guess. So this page answers the two questions dog owners ask us most: what the rules really are on Topsail Island, and whether the house is actually set up for a dog or just tolerates one.

Is Sound to Sea really dog-friendly?

Yes. Here’s exactly what that means, so there are no surprises at check-in:

  • Up to 2 dogs, for one flat $75 pet fee per stay (not per night, not per dog).
  • A flat 400-foot walk to a private beach access. No crossing a highway, and no long drive to a public lot with a leash in one hand and a cooler in the other.
  • An outdoor shower. Rinse the salt and sand off the dog, and the kids, before anyone comes inside.
  • Covered porches and a fire pit under the live oaks, so the dog can stay with the group outside in the evening.
  • The neighborhood sound-side dock, about 300 feet the other way, for calm-water mornings. Keep dogs leashed on the dock.
  • Room for the whole crew: 5 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, 11 people, and parking for up to 5 cars.

What are the dog rules on Topsail Island’s beaches?

The rules change at each town line, and that’s the thing visitors get wrong most often:

TownOn the beachNotes
Surf City (where the house is)Leash, 20 feet or shorter, year-roundClean up after your dog. Free bags are at the public accesses.
Topsail Beach (20 minutes south)Off-leash under voice control October 1 to May 14; leash May 15 to September 30The Topsail Nature Preserve at the south tip (Serenity Point) is leash-only all year.
North Topsail BeachLeash, 25 feet or shorter, year-roundFines apply for leash and cleanup violations.

Whichever town you’re in, fill in holes and keep your dog away from marked sea turtle nests from May 1 to October 31. And don’t let your dog drink seawater.

When is the best time to bring a dog to Topsail?

Fall, winter, and spring. From October 1 to May 14, you can drive 20 minutes to Topsail Beach and let the dog run on the sand. The beaches are quiet, and the sand stays cool enough for paws all day. September and October also bring warm water and our FALL10 code: 10% off the nightly rent on September and October arrivals booked direct.

Summer works too, with a plan. Walk the beach early in the morning and in the evening, when the sand is cooler and the crowds are thinner. In the middle of the day, the porches and the shade under the live oaks are the place to be.

Where can you take a dog besides the beach?

  • Surf City Bark Park, 201 Community Center Drive. It’s fenced, with separate areas for small and large dogs, and it has water stations. It’s the easy answer to “where can the dog run” in July.
  • The neighborhood dock and the marsh edge, for a calm morning walk on the sound side.
  • Restaurant patios. The Patio at the Surf in Triton Village says dogs are welcome on its outdoor patio anytime, and Salty Turtle Beer Company and The Boardroom’s beer garden welcome leashed dogs too. In Topsail Beach, Beach Shop and Grill allows dogs on its patio. Patio rules change from season to season, so call ahead anywhere else.
  • Petco in Hampstead, on the mainland side, for anything you forgot. It has a self-serve dog wash.

Where dogs can’t go: the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital (no pets, and please don’t leave them in the car), and the Bear Island ferry at Hammocks Beach State Park.

What if your dog needs a vet?

  • Surf City Pet Hospital, 304 Tortuga Lane, (910) 329-4700. It’s open weekdays (Wednesdays until 8 PM) and closed weekends. Save the number before you arrive.
  • After hours and on weekends: Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center at 50 Greenville Avenue in Wilmington is the area’s 24-hour emergency hospital, about 45 minutes from Surf City. It’s the one Surf City Pet Hospital refers to.

What to pack for a dog beach trip

  • A leash of 20 feet or shorter, which Surf City requires on the beach all year.
  • More waste bags than you think you need.
  • A collapsible water bowl and fresh water. There’s none on the sand.
  • A towel for the outdoor shower.
  • ID tags, plus your dog’s bed or crate so they settle in on the first night.
